    Four-door coupé styling is a radical departure from current S60.

    Auto Express Car ReviewsBy Will McManus15th December 2008Volvo is taking the fight straight to BMW – and judging by these pictures, it’s well prepared. The Swedish firm has redesigned the normally conservative S60 in an attempt to break into the hotly contested four-door coupé market – and this is the stunning, 3-Series-rivalling result.

    We gave you a glimpse of the car’s radical looks in Issue 1,041, when Volvo released a teaser shot. Plus, we reported that the S60 concept would debut at next month’s Detroit Motor Show.

    But this racy new study is no pipedream. According to design boss Steve Mattin, the final car will remain close to the concept. The imposing grille and flowing shoulder lines hint at a new design direction for Volvo’s range, while 20-inch alloys, bronze-painted brake calipers, integrated twin exhausts and a retractable rear diffuser show off the S60’s sporting intentions.

    Inside is an ultra-modern interior, complete with slim bucket seats and a panoramic roof. The LED headlights project an image of Viking longboats!

    But most eye-catching are the doors. The front pair open conventionally, while the rears hinge out before sliding back. As the S60 has no B-pillars, access should prove easy.

    The S60 will come crammed with a raft of new safety kit, including sensors that can apply the brakes if a pedestrian steps into the car’s path.

    Engines comprise a range of Ford and Volvo units, including a 2.0-litre diesel and a 1.6-litre turbo petrol.

    CO2-emissions at 119g/km

    The engine that Volvo Cars has chosen for the Volvo S60 Concept is a four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol unit using high-efficiency GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) technology and producing 180 horsepower.

    In a conventional petrol engine, fuel is injected into the inlet manifold ahead of the inlet valves. With direct injection, however, the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber under high pressure.
    The engine in combination with a range of other technical measures makes it possible to cut carbon dioxide emissions to 119 g/km (5.0 l/100 km).

    Volvo Cars' first production car with GTDi technology will be introduced during the second half of 2009.

    Europe has voted: about 200,000 Auto Bild readers from 27 countries have selected the most beautiful vehicles for 2009 in five categories. The Volvo S60 Concept won over 28 renowned competitors in the category of Concept Cars. The voting for the Auto Bild Design Award was expanded for the first time to Europe-wide scope this year. Votes were submitted by fax, telephone and Internet.

    "We are proud that the daring and exciting design of the Volvo S60 Concept has been honoured with such a significant design award at a European level. This is confirmation of our strong belief that we will be offering an extraordinarily attractive alternative in the highly competitive medium premium segment when the new Volvo S60 is launched on the market in 2010," says Thomas Viehweg, managing director of Volvo Car Germany GmbH.

    The Volvo S60 Concept was presented to the world public for the first time at the Motor Show in Detroit in January 2009 and opens a new design chapter in the 80-year history of the company. Completely in harmony with the principles of world-famous Scandinavian design, the exterior creates an attractive mix with the coupé-inspired silhouette and the sporty accents. Classic Volvo design elements such as the V-shaped bonnet and the striking shoulders are as much a part of the amazing study as the completely new design elements. These elements include the lean and trim window area graphics and the doors which glide, parallel to the sides of the vehicles, all the way back to the rear wheels at the push of a button. The interior is visually dominated by the glass centre console which flows in a gentle wave from the instrument panel to the back seats.

    The Auto Bild Design Award is presented every year by the motoring magazine with the highest circulation in Europe. The Volvo C30 won the Auto Bild Design Award in 2006 as the most beautiful compact car model.

    VOLVO are more important to Sweden than even Abba

    Sweden with no Volvo is unthinkable for the majority of Swedes, not least because the car firm are one of the biggest employers in the country.

    But Volvo have been put up for sale by owners Ford after running up huge losses and, in the present economic climate, there is a serious question mark over the firm’s future.

    Which is why the car pictured here is the most important car in Volvo’s history and arguably their biggest asset as Ford negotiate with potential buyers.

    One look at the stunning Volvo S60 concept is the best reason to convince potential buyers that the Swedish firm have a real future because this, with one or two adjustments, is the next S60.

    It’s a car that proves Volvos can be objects of desire as well as being safe, practical and reliable.

    The S60 made me think of Scandinavian blondes with curves in all the right places — it’s one of those cars that make you want to run your hand over the paintwork because it looks so good.

    Most importantly, it is a car you want to drive as soon as you see it, which is exactly what I did when I became the first journalist to get behind the wheel at a secret test track in Gothenberg. Even the bronze paintwork sparkled like gold in the bright Swedish sunshine.

    This is a car Volvo believe can challenge German premium brands BMW and Audi and visually it makes the 3 Series and Audi A4 look conservative.

    Alex Chan, the 28-year-old exterior designer of the S60, is from Watford and trained in the UK. He says he wanted the car to have “instant impact” and to “grab attention”. Alex, you have succeeded admirably.

    He also wanted the S60 to have an understated Scandinavian luxury. He says: “The car is for people who are successful but don’t want to shout about it. It’s a car with road presence, self-confident. Hopefully, people will see it and say ‘Wow it’s a Volvo’.”

    The S60 has a glamour that is heightened by the unique entry via parallelogram rear doors that open outwards and swing backwards — sadly they will be replaced by traditional doors in the production model, simply because of the expense.

    As you ease into the sumptuous leather seats, you are immediately aware of how light it is inside, courtesy of a full-length panoramic glass roof that sweeps back from the windscreen.

    Interior designer Lars Falk, aged 34, said his No1 goal was for the car to make a big step up in interior quality. He says: “A Volvo has never been this luxurious before. This is a premium car in craftsmanship terms.”

    Lars says he wanted the interior to have a simple elegance with a natural Scandinavian feel, which is why he used traditional birch wood trim in the cabin.

    There are lots of clever innovations, such as the gear lever selector that lies flat on the centre console for more relaxing city driving, but flicks upright for more sporty driving.

    And Lars has added another classy twist to Volvo’s revolutionary floating centre instrument console — in the concept car it is finished in hand-crafted crystal.

    Sadly, it won’t make it into the production car but Volvo are considering using crystal trim in the future.

    As the S60 is a one-off hand-built concept car, I had to restrict my driving to being Mr Sensible, which is the exact opposite to what I wanted to do, but for a concept model it handled remarkably well.

    And Volvo promise the production version will handle as well as it looks and get an engine line-up that will deliver the performance to match.

    This will include a new hi-tech 1.6litre turbo diesel engine that will slash C02 to 119g/km and deliver 50mpg-plus.

    Being a Volvo, it will have state-of-the-art safety equipment, including a collision-warning computer system that will automatically apply the brakes to avoid a crash.

    With models like the original S60, the chic C30 hatchback and the recent XC60 SUV, Volvo have been promising something special. In the S60 concept they have delivered.

    When it hits showrooms next year, it could be the breakthrough car that puts Volvo on the path to a new and glittering future.

Son halini ne zaman görecegimiz ise hala muglakta. 2009 Eylul'deki Frankfurt Otomobil Fuari'nda görulemeyecegi anlasiliyor.
