    GlacialPower GP-AL650A Power Supply

    INTRODUCTION

The power supply unit is easily one of the most important parts of any computer. No matter the system there is a rule which can never be changed and that is that whether we are talking about a simple workstation or a multi CPU / GPU gaming system they both require power to operate. Enthusiasts all agree that not all power supply units are the same and like in most cases this is also one that you get what you pay for.

It is therefore quite unfortunate that for most people power supplies seem to be of secondary interest when building a system and very often in the place of the power supply we find cheap units that are unable to provide the system with quality and stable power. I alone have seen cheap power supplies burn endangering every component in a system. So needless to say that especially with today’s countless power hungry components, having a quality power supply with enough overhead allowing it to run efficiently is more important than ever before.

GlacialTech is the dream of eight world class researchers come to life. All eight specialize in cooling, chassis, and power regulation. In 2006 GlacialPower was realized and so all of the of the combined knowledge from all those years in which they made custom solution power supplies for IBM and Dell was put into making high quality power supplies. Today GlacialPower provided us with the GP-AL650, their latest power supply featuring 650watts of power along with a few interesting extra features.

Both lists were taken from the GlacialPower product webpage.

The output connector quantities can be found on the right side of the box.
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

Up until now I have never seen a company put anything on top of a box, at least nothing important. GlacialPower not only placed a handle on the box for easier transport but also information about the available connectors, fan size, heat output and efficiency of the device.
    CONTENTS
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

Aside the GP-AL650 GlacialPower has also included an instruction manual, a set of screws and the power cable. Unfortunately this is not a modular power supply as can be easily seen in the photograph above.

    THE GP-AL650A
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

At first glance the device is just like most entry-level power supplies out there. It has a matte black finish with smooth edges for easier, safe handling and its small size allows it to fit in any case. However a few minutes later i saw that the way the cover was attached was different than every power supply I have ever seen, meaning that instead of 4 normal screws on the top of the device GlacialPower decided to put 4 screws going from top to bottom. My guess is that this was done for safety reasons or to disallow people from opening the unit.
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

As i already stated above it is unfortunate that not only this is not a modular power supply but also because it lacks the sleeve cable cover that we find in most high end power supplies.
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

Connections wise the GP-AL650 has everything most users would ever need like a 20 + 4 pin ATX connector, a 4 + 4 pin EPS connector, 2x8 pin Pciex connectors, 6 SATA connectors and 6 molex connectors. Regarding the price range of this unit the connections are far more than i had originally expected.
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

The lack of more Pciex connectors makes this unit unfit to run systems with the latest available graphic cards like the ATis 4870 or the Nvidia GTX series in CF or SLI. However the two existing 6+2 pin connectors should satisfy the majority of users.
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

The 120mm fan installed in the GP-AL650 is made by ADDA Corporation and can spin up to a max of 2500RPM producing a noice of 43dBA. The GP-AL650A comes in 2 versions, one with a 80mm and one with a 120mm fan. Since the price difference is too small i recommend the 120mm fan since it is more silent and keeps the unit colder. A unique feature in this price range is also the auto fan off which when enabled the PSU fan will not operate during idle or low load conditions in order to provide a total silent solution. Finally another feature found in many power supplies out there is the shutdown delay in which the Fan stops spinning a while after the system shuts down so it can keep cooling its components.
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

Just like every other power supply in the market the rear side has a honeycomb design which allows hot air to escape in order to keep the temperature inside the unit onto a minimum. According to GlacialPower the temperature in the unit does not climb over 50 degrees celsius.
    TEST BED
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

As usual i will be using my power hungry primary system to test the GlacialPower GP-AL650A
    TEST METHODOLOGY

In order to test the GP-AL650A i will run a series of various tests to see how well it performs. Primary test will be composed by games played in Full graphics and with a resolution of 1920x1080 which will stress not only the CPU and the memories but also the GPU in order to increase the power consumption of the system. When the first step is complete i will use two programs to stress the system and check the stability of the power supply. These two programs will be the Passmark BurnInTest and the OCCT2 stability test.

Since the system will consume large amounts of power not only due to the many attached devices but also because of the highly overclocked components these tests will provide a rock solid real world result. In order to get 100% correct results the Rails will not only be measured by CPUID Hardware monitor but also a Metex multimeter that will also measure the system load at various intervals. Last test will be done with a Digital Sound db Meter ( Decibel Meter ) that will be responsible to measure the sound output levels coming from the back of the PSU at a range of no more than 10-20cm.
    POWER CONSUMPTION
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

Although the power demands of my system even under stress cannot reach the 650W of rated power provided by the GP-AL650A the fact alone that no problems occur even at about 80-85% of total power usage is a very good sign.
    FAN SPEED
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

The ADDA Corporation made fan should be able to spin up to 2500RPM according always to the manufacturing company. However even under full stress the highest speed recorded was a little over 2000RPM. Perhaps the fan climbs up to 2500RPM if more load is placed on the power supply but I have no way of knowing that for sure. Finally as stated in the specifications sheet the fan of the GP-AL650A spins down to 0RPM when in idle mode.
    NOISE OUTPUT
     GLACIALPOWER 650 - HIGHPOWER - HPC-500

Under load the GP-AL650A is not the most silent power supply in the market but the fact that when in idle mode the fan stops is also something to be considered since this is the definition of silent.
    CONCLUSION:

Although i must admit that since i was not aware of GlacialTech until a few weeks ago i was quite reluctant and thought that their products would be low-end in performance. I must confess that i was very happy to be proven wrong. GlacialPower designed and manufactured a high quality product in both components and cabling featuring stable voltages in every rail, a rather quiet cooling fan made by Adda and a vast number of connectors unlike most power supplies in this price range.

The GP-AL650 is also capable of powering CF and SLI systems except from ones with the latest cards by ATI and NVIDIA. The lack of the extra Pciex power connectors can be considered as the only major downside of this particular unit. However taking into consideration the fact that this is a 650Watt PSU and that it would be very hard, to successfully power 2xRadeon 4870 cards in Crossfire or 2xGeforce GTX280 cards in SLI even if more Pciex connectors did exist they would be useless.

The GlacialPower GP-AL650 can be found for around 60e in the European market and for about 80$ in the USA. While it is not the cheapest PSU out there still its high quality and performance along with the fact that it is a 650w PSU make it the ideal candidate for people who want a good all around performing PSU and at the same time don't want to spend lots of money.
